the real reason for Memorial Day

Just moments after I posted about our Memorial Day parade antics, I received this email from a friend of mine, Catherine Clees. Don and her husband, Terry, met during there time in their Masters of Theology program.

Catherine and Terry's son, Terry Jr., is currently in a vet hospital, after an explosion almost ended his life and left him permenantly disabled. The following is a picture of his friend, Sgt. Matt Lammers, just before the explosion that injured both men:

The explosion caused Matt to lose both legs and one arm. He is currently being cared for at the Center for the Intrepid in Texas. Unfortunately, like Terry Jr., his wife couldn't handle the stress of having a disabled husband, and she left him with his children. We instantly want to condemn her for what she has done, and while it is an absolutely horrible situation, we cannot truly understand what impact this has had on her and their children as well.

Please pray for Matt in his recovery both physically and mentally, for Terry Jr. and his therapy, and for the families out there that just don't understand why and don't know what more to do than run.

Parades are wonderful and fun, but these men and women are the real reason for Memorial Day. The next time you see a vet, just say "Thank you", because they have given they minds, hearts, souls and bodies for the freedoms that we take so carelessly for granted.

Godspeed in your recoveries, Matt and Terry. We love you.
