I have never minced words when it comes to Don's upbringing or mine. Both our pasts are tainted and full of ick: violence, divorces, lies, anger, etc. When we started having children, we promised each other that we were going to focus on creating our own family tree, roots up, one that wasn't gnarled and diseased. With Don Sr. passing, it would seem that that time has come. Our little sapling, in the middle of a dense forest, has popped its little head out of the ground, searching for the sun. While my heart is stilled pained by Don Sr. leaving us so soon, and even though I still miss my parents desperately, today is a new day. A new day for Don and I, for our daughters, for the family yet to come.
Now we you call us nuts, we will smile and agree. After all, "Mighty oaks from little acorns grow".
